About Alerta de incêndio florestal / Forest Fire Alert!

How we help the Bombeiros

The associations primary function is to provide provision and supplies to the local firefighters during emergencies, arrange collection points for donated emergency supplies, provide fire alerts for the group of members through the social network, facebook, and fund raising for local volunteer firefighters. We are not affiliated to any particular station , but hope to be working with every station across the Algarve .

History of Aif

Alerta de incêndio florestal / Forest Fire Alert Facebook group, which is where the now official Alerta de incêndio florestal  association started, was created by a gentleman who has now left the Algarve, Debby Burton Chairman of the Association was an admin for the face book group from the early days. Initially it was just local people commenting “I can see smoke here”, “there are a lot of fire engines just gone by in this town and that sort of thing. Debby thought it would be of assistance to use the civil protection website, to confirm fires and the gravity of them and from that point on the Facebook group became a valuable source of information for the local community, daily updates are made with relevant fire information as well as more regular updates in the event of a fire.

After the fires of 2016 Debby realised there was a need for an association which could help aid the distribution of provisions and finances to the necessary Bombeiros stations and locations in the event of a fire. We are now more active than ever in the facebook group promoting events and fire awareness as well as regular updates from the civil protection Map. We no longer use word of mouth and only update the group with official information.

Alerta de incêndio florestal / Forest Fire Alert Members

A brief introduction  to the members of the association.

I am a british trained nurse living and working in Albufeira for over 30 years. I first came to the Algarve to visit my family in 1977 and loved everything about from the very first day. After training as a nurse in the UK I moved out here working in Tourism. After Portugal joined the EU and was able to register as a nurse here I worked in the private sector for several years. In the meantine had married and had 2 children. In 1994 joined the portuguese health system working at the Albufeira Centro de Saúde where I still work. Albufeira, indeed the whole Algarve  has changed so much over the years in some ways for the better in some ways not but I still  love living here. I joined this association after following the excellent work done by Debby, Andrew all the other volunteers last year and  if I can contrubute in some way I am very plesed to do so. The problem of fires is something that is particularly close to my heart as I have a son who is a firefighter in Albufeira and know they need all the help they can get from the community

Secretary, Alerta de incêndio florestal / Forest Fire Alert!

I am a British Citizen, lived and worked overseas in the Oil and Gas Industry for the past 20+ years, decided to settee in Monchique, Portugal in 2015. Keen motorcycle enthusiast and enjoy mountain walks with my dogs. I joined the association with a keen interest in fire prevention measures and also fund raising events after last year’s fires here on my beautiful mountain range and seeing the impact it had on the local community and the external emergency services which came to our aid, I decided I wanted to be more proactive in my community to assist in prevention initiatives and fund raising events.

Position within Association, Alerta de incêndio florestal / Forest Fire Alert!

Debby and her Husband Burt moved to Algarve in 2010 after holidaying here for 10 yrs. Debby was a mental health nurse manager who worked in mental health for 30yrs. Four years ago following the fire at the autodrome in Mexilhoeira my husband Burt and I went to Lagos, to see if we could help after seeing lots of appeals for water and provisions for the Bomberios. We knew we wanted to do something practical and so we offered to collect provisions in times of crisis, so it was agreed that if they had a fire with over 100 Bomberios we would be called. They gave us official documents to use at the supermarkets and so we went to all of our local supermarkets and arranged collections of provisions for the Bombeiros, if needed. The Bombeiros contacted us and we collected all the provisions and took them to the station. There we helped put together over 100 packed meals to be distributed in the Bombeiros who were fighting the fire.
